How to Disable Phone Link from Automatically Running at Startup

Read in this article how to disable the Phone Link app from automatically running at startup in Windows 10/11.

What is it? Phone Link is a native Windows app that lets you access your Android phone’s photos, receive notifications, check SMS messages, and even make calls.

The Phone Link app runs automatically in startup and keeps running in the background, thus unnecessarily using system resources.

To disable the Phone Link app, press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open the Task Manager and go to the Startup tab, find Phone Link there, right-click on it and click Disable.

If the solution above didn’t work or if Phone Link is not showing up in the Task Manager startup:

(If no startup items are showing and you see the message “there are no startup items to display” in Task Manager, make sure to read the article I’ve written on it.)

How to Disable Phone Link from Running in the Background in Apps & Features

  1. Type Apps & Features on Windows Search and click on Open:
  2. Browse the App list to find Phone Link, click on the three dots next to it, then select Advanced Options:
  3. Under Background apps permissions, toggle Let this app run in background to Never.
  4. Then under Runs at log-in, toggle Phone Link to No:
  5. Reboot your PC.

Now the Phone Link will not be starting automatically anymore.

The Phone Link app is unnecessary if you never use it, and sometimes it can cause system errors.

(For example, the Microsoft.YourPhone \ PhoneExperienceHost.exe error. If you see this pop up often on your screen, I’ve written an article on how to fix it.)

So, if you don’t use it, you can just delete it from your system by following the steps below:

  1. Enter Windows PowerShell on Windows Search and select Run as Administrator:
  2. On Windows PowerShell, type the following command and press Enter:
    get-appxpackage Microsoft.YourPhone | remove-appxpackage
  3. Reboot your PC.

(If you prefer to remove Phone Link and other Windows native apps more straightforwardly, I’ve written an article on how you can uninstall multiple programs at once, including native apps.)

To disable the Phone Link from running in the background, open the Task Manager, go to the Startup Tab, right-click on Phone Link, and select Disable.

If you can’t see Phone Link in the Task Manager startup tab, go instead to Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > click on the three dots next to Phone Link > Advanced Options, then toggle Let this app run in background to Never and also Runs at log-in to No.
